On February 25, 1945, during World War II action against the Empire of Japan, six men raised the US flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima in the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal. The four in the front line, left to right, are Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, Harold Schultz, and Harlon Block, and the two in back are Michael Strank, behind Sousley, and Rene Gagnon [actually Harold P. Keller], behind Schultz.
