Southwest Corridor Park is a linear Boston park running from Back Bay and the South End through Northeastern University to Forest Hills in Jamaica Plain along an active rail corridor. Its importance lies in its origin: in the 1960s, the land was cleared for the planned Southwest Expressway, a stretch of Interstate 95 that led to demolition of thousands of homes in the South End, Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain. Neighborhood protest helped persuade Governor Francis W. Sargent to cancel the highway in 1969. After federal approval to shift highway funds to mass transit, residents’ interim gardens and the Orange Line relocation helped turn the cleared route into a 52-acre public landscape completed in 1990.
