The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is among the largest art museums in the Americas, with more than 450,000 works on a major Fenway campus that has grown through successive expansions since its move there in 1909. Founded in 1870 at the Boston Athenæum, it later occupied a Gothic Revival building in Copley Square before relocating to its current neoclassical home. Its collections are especially strong in Japanese art, along with Egyptian and Nubian art, Dutch Golden Age painting, French Impressionism, American art, Chinese art, and musical instruments. Through architectural growth, scholarship, and collecting, it has remained one of Boston’s defining cultural institutions despite recent financial and labor challenges.
