Wood County was created on February 5, 1850, and organized on August 5, 1850. It was named in honor of George T. Wood, who lived from 1815 to 1856 and was a member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas, an officer in the Mexican War, and governor of Texas from 1847 to 1849. Quitman is the county seat.
