John Duncan's Fort was a private settler's fort built in 1858. The cabins of four families, totaling 30 people, formed a stockade for defense against Indians. Each day a hunting party went out for meat while other men stood guard. In spring the residents went home to farm, but each fall through 1865 they forted up there again.
