First Methodist Church was organized in 1856 in an area so wild that the church gave a missionary a $50 revolver and a $125 horse. On this site, the first frame church was built in 1882. The present building was constructed from 1914 to 1917 of San Saba Marble and is said to be the only all-marble Methodist church in the U.S. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1965 and United Methodist Historic Site No. 198.
