Dwellings of many sizes are spread across the mesas and canyons of Bandelier. Some, like the small site here, were seasonal homes or field houses occupied during the summer while crops were tended. The Ancestral Pueblo people grew corn, beans, and squash, relying on rainfall from late-summer storms. Pumice soils helped hold the moisture between these scattered storms.
