Montegut School is one of the oldest schools in Terrebonne Parish. It stands on land purchased on January 27, 1912, from Point Farm Planting Co. for $1,100, and the school was built and furnished for a total of $10,158. With its community, it has endured devastating hurricanes and storms, as well as winds, wars, conflicts, thousands of stomping feet, slamming rulers, and sliding desks, yet it overcame these challenges gracefully. Founded in 1912, it still retains original cloak rooms, doors, top floor windows, and an old stairway. Before the basement floor was enclosed with lattice work, it had two restrooms built on red cement floors used for roller skating. Though old and small, it has surpassed 100 years and is regarded as priceless.
