U.S. Army Sgt. Leroy Johnson of Oakdale, La., gave his life on December 15, 1944, on the island of Leyte when he covered two Japanese grenades with his own body, saving the lives of those with him. For this outstanding gallantry, he was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
