The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was built by the Nashville and Chattanooga R.R. from 1849 to 1852. It was 2228 feet long. V. K. Stevenson served as president; E.D. Sanford as principal assistant engineer; Jas. H. Grant as chief engineer; M. Merriweather as assistant engineer; and Thomas C. Bates as contractor.
