Helmick Covered Bridge, east of Blissfield in Clark Township, Ohio, is a two-span wooden truss road bridge built in 1863 by John Shrake of Newark and regarded as one of the state’s oldest covered bridges. Costing $2,107 to construct, it became vital to the nearby village of Helmick by carrying traffic to two grist mills that attracted farmers from as far as 25 miles away. Named for Congressman William Helmick of Tuscarawas County, the bridge later fell into decay and closed in 1981. After its 1975 listing on the National Register of Historic Places, local citizens raised more than $250,000 to restore it, completing the work in 1996.
