Egg Rock Light stood on Egg Rock in Massachusetts from its establishment in 1856, prompted by a schooner wreck that killed five people. Its original design placed a lantern atop a stone dwelling built from granite quarried on the island. After another wreck, the schooner Shark, the light was changed to a fixed red signal because it was reportedly confused with Long Island Head Light in Boston Harbor. Rebuilt after an 1897 fire with a square tower attached to the house, it was later dimmed during World War I, automated in 1919, and soon dismantled. The tower was destroyed in 1927, and Egg Rock became a bird sanctuary.
