Floyd Collins was the first to explore Sand Cave. Fallen rock trapped him in a narrow passage 150 ft. from the entrance on Jan. 30, 1925. Rescuers reached him with food and heat for a short time, but aid was cut off when shifting earth closed the passage. Engineers sank a 55-foot shaft but were unable to reach Collins' body until February 16. The rescue attempt was publicized worldwide and aroused the sympathy of the nation.
