Jane Simmons Roulston was born March 27, 1783, in Charleston, South Carolina, and died May 12, 1870, in Marion County, Tennessee. She was the wife of Colonel James Roulston, who was born June 16, 1772, in Augusta County, Virginia, and died August 7, 1844, in Marion County, Tennessee. He served as a representative from Jackson County, Tennessee, to the legislature at Knoxville in 1802, and as colonel in command of the Third Tennessee Regiment in Carroll's Division under General Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. He later served as a representative from Jackson County, Alabama, to the legislature at Montgomery in 1828. The Roulstons were pioneer settlers and land owners.
