Andrews Wildlife Management Area, on the Suwannee River north of Chiefland, protects 3,582 acres that include Florida’s largest continuous tract of old-growth hardwood hammock forest. Its varied habitats include upland forest, floodplain swamp, and cypress-tupelo wetlands, supporting wildlife such as flying squirrels, owls, bats, otters, Suwannee alligator snapping turtles, snakes, and Gulf sturgeon. The area is also important for recreation and wildlife viewing, with more than ten miles of trails and unpaved roads, an interpretive boardwalk through changing habitats, a place on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, and opportunities for hunting and fishing.
