Birdsboro provides a trailhead developed through the efforts of the Community of Birdsboro and the Schuylkill River Heritage Area, giving visitors access and parking from Routes 724 and 422. The trail section upriver between Birdsboro and Gibraltar is an on-road route of approximately 3.5 miles that crosses Route 82, with quieter travel recommended on Schuylkill and Old River roads rather than the more direct Route 724, though Route 724 must still be crossed carefully because it is wide and busy. Nearby, the Daniel Boone Homestead preserves historic structures, offers programs and exhibits, protects 579 acres of open space, and presents the story of Daniel Boone's youth and the lives and cultures of the region's 18th century settlers. Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site preserves an early 19th century iron plantation, including the furnace complex, the Ironmaster's Mansion, and other buildings connected with furnace operations. Morlatton Village at Douglassville marks Berks County's first settlement along the Schuylkill River and includes the Mouns Jones House, built by Swedish settlers in 1716 as the county's oldest house, along with the White Horse Tavern, the George Gouglass Mansion, and the Covered-Bridge Keeper's House.
