Moss Lake Bog in Caneadea, New York, near Houghton, is a protected natural area built around a 15-acre glacial kettle lake within an 84-acre site. As sphagnum moss gradually spread over the water, the lake became an acidic bog, forming the distinctive landscape preserved there today. Managed by The Nature Conservancy as part of Moss Lake Preserve, it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973. The area is open daily to the public, with a trail around the lake and a boardwalk across the moss. It is also known for wildlife, including carnivorous plants and more than 75 recorded bird species.
