Going upriver on October 21, 1804, William Clark recorded passing just above camp a small river on the left side called by the Indians Chiss-Cho-tar, the Heart River, about 38 yards wide and containing a good deal of water. Some distance up this river stood a stone in which the Indians had great faith and on which they said they saw painted all the calamities and good fortune to happen to the nation and parties who visited it. Near this place, about 2 miles off in the open prairie, a lone oak that had withstood fire received great respect, and people made holes and tied strings through their necks and around the tree to make them brave.
