Cedar Point Light in Sandusky, Ohio, stands on a Lake Erie site long used to guide maritime traffic and remains one of the area’s preserved historic structures. A lighthouse was first built there in 1838, with a front range light added in 1853, and the present building was completed in 1862. It served as a navigational aid until 1909, when the tower was removed, but the station continued in federal service as a buoy depot, radio beacon station, and search and rescue boat station until 1975. Later restored, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and reopened in 2001 as part of a vacation cottage development.
