Coppervale Ski Area in Lassen County, northeastern California, is a small ski area about 18 miles from Susanville and has served for decades as a local winter recreation spot rather than a major destination resort. Established in the late 1930s, it is one of the region’s long-running skiing areas. Since the 1960s, Lassen Community College has owned and operated it, an unusual arrangement that has closely linked the mountain to the surrounding community and helped preserve its distinctly local character.
