Caribou Wilderness is a protected volcanic plateau in northern California, east of Lassen Volcanic National Park, encompassing 20,546 acres within Lassen National Forest. Managed as a primitive area from 1932 and permanently protected under the Wilderness Act in 1964, it is marked by cinder cones, volcanic buttes, cliffs, barren rock, forests, and 23 named lakes with many additional ponds and tarns. Its largely intact landscape provides headwaters for the Susan River and Bailey Creek and preserves one of the few largely pristine forests in California’s Cascade region. Kept free of development and motorized access, it remains a place for low-impact recreation and long-term conservation.
