Ann Murphy Cottage honors the widow Ann Murphy (1731-1814), one of the most influential and devoted founders of Methodism in Uniontown and the surrounding area. Active with her husband in organizing Methodist societies in Maryland, she continued this work after moving to the Uniontown area in 1781. Known as Mother Murphy, she was famous for the hospitality of her home to itinerant preachers, including Bishop Asbury. Funds to renovate the cottage into the campus library, meeting lounge, and museum were given by G. E. Clifton of Leechburg as a memorial to his wife, Mrs. Ivy Clifton.
