Approximately halfway between Augusta and Columbia stood the house of Jacob Odom, where George Washington spent the night of May 21, 1791, while traveling northward through South Carolina. At that time his escort consisted of Colonels Wade Hampton and Thomas Taylor and Mr. Robert Lythgoe. This stop was noted in Washington's diary.
