Ridge Hill School, built in 1934, replaced the six-classroom frame Ridge Hill Rosenwald School built in 1923-24 with partial funding from the Julius Rosenwald Foundation, which built more than 500 African-American schools in South Carolina from 1917 to 1932. After the earlier school burned in 1934, the new school was built on the sale plan at a cost of about $8000, and students in grades 1-11 attended it until grade 12 was added in 1947; the school closed in 1957. The nearby chimney is all that remains of a Faith Cabin Library built here in 1934, the second in the state, part of a program founded in 1932 by Willie Lee Buffington to give small-town and rural African-Americans better access to books; more than 100 were built in South Carolina and Georgia from 1932 to 1960, and this building has been the Ridge Spring Star Community Center since 1978.
