In Floresville, Texas, the Wilson County Courthouse and Jail preserve the county’s 19th-century civic center and its continuing public life. The courthouse, designed by Alfred Giles in an Italianate style with local brick, was later altered when its brick was plastered over in the 1930s and remodeled again in the 1950s. The jail, designed in 1887 by James Riely Gordon and built by B.B. Reid, remained in use until 1974. Its layout combined the sheriff’s living quarters on the ground floor with prisoner cells above. Together, the buildings are recognized historic places, and the former jail now serves as a museum preserving its original spaces.
