Confederate Brigadier General Joseph H. Lewis commanded the famous Orphan Brigade in the Civil War and in 1861 conducted a recruiting and training camp here. He served in the state legislature from 1850 to 1854 and from 1869 to 1870, in the US Congress from 1870 to 1873, and as a member of the Kentucky Court of Appeals for 24 years from 1874 to 1898, including six years as its chief justice. Born in Barren County, he is buried in Glasgow Cemetery.
