Mount Peale is the highest summit in Utah’s La Sal Mountains, the highest point in the Manti-La Sal National Forest and Mount Peale Research Natural Area, and Utah’s highest point outside the Uinta Mountains. Named for mineralogist Albert Peale of the 1875 Hayden Survey, it rises sharply from the arid Colorado Plateau southeast of Moab, giving it unusual prominence near Canyonlands and Arches. Its great elevation creates a cold alpine dry-summer subarctic climate with heavy forest, snowy winters, cool summer nights, and a persistent north-side snowfield. Visible from more than 115 miles away, it is most often climbed from La Sal Pass by a short, steep off-trail route.
