Jenny (Jennie) Wiley was captured by Indians in present Bland County, Virginia, in October 1787 or 1789. Four children and her brother were killed, and a child born in captivity was also killed. A Harman party pursued but had to give up. She came here and, joined by others, built a stockade. After nearly a year, Mrs. Wiley escaped and followed a "dream" to safety here. She was reunited with her husband in Virginia, and they settled in this county in 1800.
