Established in 1987 in Greenville, Texas, the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum unites Hunt County’s cotton heritage with the life and legacy of Audie Murphy, who was born in the county and worked in Greenville before military service. Its exhibits highlight cotton’s importance as the region’s leading cash crop in the early 20th century and devote major attention to veterans and remembrance. The grounds include the Hunt County War Memorial, dedicated in 2004, with a 10-foot bronze statue of Murphy by Gordon Thomas, stones naming the county’s war dead, and quotations from Murphy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan. In 2012, Murphy memorabilia from San Antonio’s Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital was added for permanent display.
