Opatrny Village Site
History
6
Opatrny Village Site in Ohio preserves the remains of an ancient village occupied from about A.D. 1000 to 1600. Associated with the Monongahela culture and contemporary with the Fort Ancient tradition, it offers important evidence of long-term cultural change in the region. Much of the site remained intact because the land was used as pasture, despite deep occupational debris and its location along U.S. Route 40. Protection through its National Register of Historic Places listing in 1975 also helped shield it from a highway project. Extensive excavations around 1980 produced findings considered highly significant for understanding local cultures and their impact on the surrounding landscape.
