Here in 1815 Benjamin Lundy organized the Union Human Society, the first abolitionist society in the U.S. Born in 1789 in N.J. and died in 1839 in Illinois, he edited The Genius of Universal Emancipation from 1821 to 1838 and devoted his life to the abolition of slavery.
