French soldiers fought on this ground and died for the independence of the United States during the Battle of the Hook. Jacob Colin, a hussar, was killed in battle on Oct. 3, 1781. Pierre Didier was killed in battle on Oct. 3, 1781. Denis Jacob, a corporal, died of his wounds on Oct. 10, 1781. Jean Dossin, a grenadier, died of his wounds on Oct. 19, 1781. Jean Scherrer, a hussar, died of his wounds on Oct. 22, 1781.
