In 1886, Richard Warren Sears, a 22-year-old Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway agent, first sold a shipment of watches from North Redwood. His mail-order enterprises eventually grew into Sears, Roebuck and Co., the nation's largest retailer and later a diversified financial services corporation. The park stands adjacent to the site of the former Redwood station and is dedicated to Richard Sears as part of the North Redwood Centennial on August 19, 1984.
