The SS Mary was a wooden, steam-propelled vessel with a gross tonnage of 174 and horsepower of 216, owned and piloted by Captain John W. Hatch from 1893 to 1906. One summer night after completing her run to Ogdensburg, she was moored behind the home of John and Hattie Hatch in Waddington when her steam engine exploded; she was hopelessly lost to fire and sank. She was uncovered a half century later during the Seaway Project. The Hatch family had settled in Waddington, NY, in 1831.
