The Fleming Building was erected in 1863–1864 by John Ziegenbein as a general store. It was sold to Herman Lohse in 1879, to George Aldrich in 1881, and to A.C. Fleming and Alex Hemphill in 1888. The Bank of Lincoln, Lincoln’s first bank, operated here from 1902 to 1911, the first Lincoln library was here from 1906 to 1909, and the U.S. Post Office was here from 1914 to 1924. Other well-known long-term occupants included A.B. Crook and Son, groceries, from 1896 to 1917; Goodenough Jewelry from 1916 to 1960; Wyatt Hardware from 1925 to 1933; Hellewell Groceries from 1935 to 1942; and Creer Bros., groceries, from 1942 to 1956.
