Walcott Covered Bridge in Bracken County, Kentucky, is a seventy-five-foot poplar covered bridge on stone abutments, built with a truss system combining Queen post and King post types. Once part of Kentucky Highway 1159 at Locust Creek, it was bypassed after a concrete bridge replaced it for highway use in 1954. Its enclosed white-painted sides and roof reflect the practical purpose of covered bridges: protecting the deck and framing from weather, and traditionally also making horses less wary of crossing. After severe flood damage in 1997 and 1998, it was reconstructed in 2002 about four hundred feet east, preserving one of Kentucky’s surviving historic covered spans.
