Floyd County covers 376 square miles and was formed in 1831 from Montgomery, with land later added from Franklin; it was named for John Floyd, Governor of Virginia from 1830 to 1834, and Buffalo Knob is in the county. Roanoke County covers 305 square miles and was formed in 1838 from Botetourt and Montgomery; it was probably named for the Roanoke River, General Andrew Lewis lived there, and the city of Roanoke is known as the Magic City of the South.
