Capitol Dome is a 6,120-foot summit in Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah, rising above the Fremont River corridor near the park’s visitor center. One of the park’s defining landmarks, its rounded form reminded early explorers and settlers of the dome of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., helping give Capitol Reef its name and tying the peak directly to the park’s identity. The mountain is composed of Navajo Sandstone formed about 180 million years ago from a vast sand sea, and the surrounding landscape was later bent into the Waterpocket Fold during the Laramide Orogeny.
