Pectols Pyramid is a 6,211-foot Navajo Sandstone mountain near the center of Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah and a prominent landmark near the visitor center, Navajo Dome, and Capitol Dome. Its summit honors Ephraim Portman Pectol, whose advocacy helped secure creation of Capitol Reef National Monument in 1937. The mountain also reflects the region’s geologic history: sandstone formed about 180 million years ago from wind-shaped Jurassic dunes, then later uplifted into dramatic relief by deformation associated with the Laramide Orogeny and the Waterpocket Fold. Runoff from the mountain enters the Fremont River within the larger Colorado River basin.
