Founded on August 14, 1873, as Seneca City and chartered on March 14, 1874, Seneca was named for an Indian village on the Seneca River. Its location was determined by the junction of the Blue Ridge Railroad and the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Railway. Its population was 382 in 1880 and 6382 in 1970.
