In 1938, seven teenage Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees and a forestry foreman lost their lives here while trying to extinguish a 134-acre wildfire. The crew lacked sufficient experience and training and were exhausted from fighting a previous fire. The Wildfire Lessons Learned Center later incorporated these tragic events into a case study used to train firefighters nationwide, and that ongoing training has saved many lives.
