Tamarack Swamp Natural Area is a protected boreal, non-glacial bog in Sproul State Forest in northern Pennsylvania, encompassing 267 acres within a much larger 4,000-acre wetland. Named for Pennsylvania’s only deciduous conifer, it also forms the headwaters of Drury Run and is widely valued for bird habitat, earning recognition from Audubon Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Settlement reached its western edge around 1827, and moose antlers found there about 1865 showed the animals once lived locally. Logging and development damaged parts of the swamp through the early 20th century and into the 1940s, but conservation efforts in the 1990s added it to protected state forest land despite continuing development pressures.
