Mount Erie, on Fidalgo Island in Washington, rises within Anacortes park land and at 1,273 feet is the island’s highest point. Named in 1841 by the Wilkes Expedition for the Battle of Lake Erie, it is known for a summit viewpoint with expansive views, a paved access road, and climbing that grew steadily from the 1960s onward. Geologically, it is part of the Fidalgo Complex and consists mainly of diorite formed in the Jurassic through intrusive volcanic activity, then exposed by uplift, erosion, folding, and faulting. Glaciation later carved the mountain, leaving summit striations and sending erratics to places such as Coupeville and Seattle.
