Anacortes Community Forest Lands on Fidalgo Island protects forests, lakes, wetlands, Mount Erie, and nearby Sugarloaf in a landscape west and south of Anacortes, Washington. Created from city land acquired in 1919, the area was logged for decades to produce revenue. By the late 1980s, declining returns and growing public opposition to logging shifted priorities toward recreation, habitat, and scenery, especially the trail system. A Forest Endowment Fund began in 1990, logging was ended as a permitted use in 1991 except for removing downed or dangerous trees, and a 1998 conservation easement program helped preserve 1,500 acres by mid-2007.
