At the hub of Newport's four historical transportation arteries—the Juniata River, the eighteen twenty-nine Pennsylvania Canal, the eighteen forty-nine Pennsylvania Railroad, now Norfolk Southern, and State Highway thirty-four—stands a tribute to American veterans that unites past, present, and future. On the left, the World War One Marine is William H. Saylor, the first Newport soldier killed in battle, who died in France in June nineteen eighteen. A watch symbolizes the passage of time. On the right are Newport veteran Christopher Gross and his grandchildren, Nola Harris and Bennett Vilk, wearing his uniform with love, respect, and admiration. Butterflies symbolize life and the stewardship of liberty from one generation to another. Items in the foreground represent the country's military service branches. The work was created by Newport High School art classes, their teacher Jessica Barlup, and visiting artist-in-residence Jon Laidacker of Philadelphia, with support from the Arts-in-Residency program of the Perry County Council of the Arts and many community participants. More than one hundred community members helped paint it during the twenty seventeen Youth Art Day at Newport High School, and hundreds attended its dedication in July twenty seventeen at Community Day.
