Dr. Johann Palm, founder of Palmstown, later renamed Palmyra in 1810, was born in Kloister Heilbron, Wurtemburg, Germany, on July 25, 1713. He settled near Elizabeth, N.J., on Aug. 11, 1750, joined the Bindnagle Colony in 1764, and on July 11, 1766, purchased 100 acres of land and founded Palmstown. At the Battle of Brandywine on Sept. 11, 1777, he rendered medical aid to wounded Continental soldiers, and he took the oath of allegiance to the colonies on Sept. 27, 1777. He died on Apr. 25, 1799, and was buried in Bindnagle Cemetery, three miles north of Palmyra. The community also honors its soldiers, sailors, and marines who offered their lives in defense of their country for the preservation of righteousness, humanity, and freedom.
