Entrepreneur and philanthropist Milton S. Hershey was born here on September 13, 1857. He founded the Lancaster Caramel Company in 1886 and the Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894, and introduced milk chocolate in 1900. He developed Hershey as a model town and the home of the world's largest chocolate factory. With his wife, Catherine Sweeney, he founded the Milton Hershey School in 1909 and endowed it with his personal fortune.
