Tar Springs, four miles south, was a fashionable health resort in the 1840s with the unique attraction of a 100-foot cliff from which tar bubbled while eleven springs flowed from its base, each with a different type of mineral water. Indians knew and used these curative waters. Wiley B. Rutledge, Justice of U.S. Supreme Court from 1943 to 1949, was born at Tar Springs resort in 1894.
