Turnip Rock is a small Lake Huron rock formation off Pointe Aux Barques at the tip of Michigan’s Thumb. Near the shoreline and close to another rock called the Thumbnail, it is a stack deeply undercut by wave action, leaving a narrow base and a much wider top that gives it the appearance and name of a turnip. A concrete collar at the waterline was built to slow erosion. Its unusual shape has made it a popular sightseeing destination, though it lies entirely on private property, cannot be reached by road, and is accessible only by water. In 2013, it was a finalist in Michigan’s Seven Wonders contest.
