Port Crescent State Park occupies 640 acres on Lake Huron near the tip of Michigan’s Thumb, on the site of the former settlement of Port Crescent at the mouth of the Pinnebog River. Established through state land purchases beginning in 1956 and expanded significantly in 1977, it preserves a landscape once associated with the vanished town and the Pack & Woods Sawmill, whose 120-foot chimney was demolished in 1961 despite local objections. The park now serves as a lakeshore recreation area with trails, camping, and year-round outdoor activities, and in 2012 it was designated a Michigan dark sky preserve for its notable night-sky viewing.
